From the Elders
Jesus
told us about two responses to "these words of mine," those who hear
His words and puts them into practice — called a wise
builder — and those who hear His words and does not put
them into practice — called a foolish builder. (Matthew 7:24-27).
There were two decidedly different outcomes. The Holy Spirit through the
writings of James said, "Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do
and doesn't do it, sins." (James 4:17). It is clear that it is not what
you know about the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles, but what you do with
what you know.
If,
by the end of Our Journey 2019, the congregation doesn't get but one
thing out of Our Journey, let it be this: I have a personal responsibility to
read the Scriptures with a mindset that probes the text, my own heart and
conscience and asks: "What is this text calling me to be and/or am I a
partner with the Holy Spirit?" To this end we have chosen straight
forward, short verses, which have a clear message (theology of the obvious). Ultimately, these scriptures are to help all
of us grow in Christ-likeness. If you are mature in the trait a verse is
addressing and you practice it regularly, let us give thanks to God (2
Thessalonians 1:3), and reach out and share what God has invested in you with
others.
The
past two weeks we have been considering Jesus is Seen in How We Treat One
Another, Part 1, The One Another Heart and Part 2, A Life Worthy
of Our Calling. This week we continue with Part 3. Showing Concern for
the Weak and Fallen. This Christian characteristic—how we treat the weak,
the fallen and the burdened is basic to who we are. Galatians 6:1-5
specifically direct us to help the weak, fallen and burdened. The purpose here
is to take what we have seen in the preceding lessons and think through how it
applies to a rescuing the weak and the fallen, and helping with a burden. Just
as the shepherd in the parable of the lost sheep (Matthew 18:12-14) was very
urgent and intentional about finding and rescuing the lost sheep, so we need to
be with regard to our brothers and sisters.
Much
of this lesson is about the frame of mind, attitudes and demeanor needed by the
rescuer. In preparation , let us reflect
on Matthew 7:3-5. Note Colossians 3:12, calls us to be clothed with
"compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." They are
Christ-like traits that we all involved should strive to have. Pride has no
place in a rescue or burden-sharing endeavor. We are God's fellow workers (1
Corinthians 3:9) in this endeavor.
Earnest prayer by the rescuer(s) and others who may be involved is a
must. When working with someone who is
overtaken in a sin, if after prayerful, diligent restoration efforts fail the
church is called to expel that person form the fellowship. This action is the
ultimate form of rebuke and is not to be taken lightly. It is needed to avoid
corrupting the church and to end sinful behavior that is bringing reproach on
Christ and his bride, the church (1 Corinthians 5:2, 4-7, 13; 2Thessalonians
3:14-15). For this coming week:
Christian Characteristic: Jesus is seen in how we treat one another, Part 3 –
Showing concern for the weak and fallen
Key Words:
"Carry each other's burdens"
Memory Verse:
Galatians 6:1-2
It our privilege to be on this Journey together with you.
Please continue in prayer for this church, as we "travel" along. In
Christian love,
Chip, Ed and
Richard
