From the Elders
Our Journey 2019 continues. Our journey thought for this week is The
Critical Christian Characteristic, “Abiding with the Holy Spirit.” This is a
paramount subject in the New Testament. Did you know there are over 240 direct
references to the work of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament? True, some are
addressing the “sign gifts,” but not all. Do we read over these passages
because we do not know what to do with them? Or, do we relegate all of these to
the first century of the church’s existence and dismiss them as historical
artifacts? Hopefully, by this time next week we will have better insights into
the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the people of God, individually and
collectively, and we will be strengthened in faith, hope and love. Let us truly
open our hearts to what the scriptures have to say on this critical
subject.
On January 10, one of the foundational beliefs that we cannot compromise
was the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Our statement was:
The Holy
Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. The Spirit is unseen, but is not
imaginary (John 3:8). He is God’s many splendored agent in this world and is
completely in tune with God’s heart and His will. He is the indwelling of God
in His people on this earth. In fact we are told that the body of a redeemed
believer is a temple of the Holy Spirit, “who is in you, whom you received from
God.” (1Corinthians 6:19). He is the Counselor sent from the Father in the name
of Jesus Christ. He is God’s deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. He
intercedes for the Saints according to God’s will. Through and by Him we have
the Scriptures (the Bible) to guide us in the pathway of righteousness. The
fruit of the Spirit in the life of the believer is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The Spirit is
God’s instrument of insight and unity. In doing His work the Spirit will never
do, or lead anyone to do anything, that is not in accordance with the
Scriptures.
In some ways this begs the question, “So what?”
Sunday we were privileged to have Earl Lavender with us again as we began our week focused on “Abiding with the Holy Spirit” and
pursue this question. This a subject to which Earl has given much attention
over several years. His inquiries have not been just theological. He has worked
to help God’s people to understand what the living presence and role of the
Holy Spirit means in the life of believers in Jesus Christ, as each seeks
his/her place in the mission of God. That is spot on as to what this
Characteristic is all about. If you were unable to be with us Sunday, please
listen to the lesson on our website or get a cd.
We are a privileged people. God has given us the gift of the abiding Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38) and
chosen us to be the temple of the Holy Spirit here on earth (1 Corinthians
6:19). This is more than a theological abstraction. It is a fact of our
spiritual lives. Some have asked, “How can you measure this?” Galatians 5:22-23
says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there
is no law.” How do you measure the work of the Spirit? Ask, “Am I, and is this
church, growing in the fruit of the
Holy Spirit? What do my/our attitudes and behaviors tell me/us?”
Continue to pray for Our Journey together, and especially this
week for richer understanding of the gift of the Holy Spirit. Commit to
studying this matter throughout the week.
May God’s Spirit continue to abide with us,
The elders,
Chip, Ed and Richard
