APRIL 3, 2019

We rejoice with the angels over the birth of a new brother. Lance Moore, a resident of His Way, was baptized Wednesday, March 27th. Please encourage him.

We welcome Jackie and Victoria Parcus. They met with the elders Sunday, March 24th, stating they wish to work and fellowship with us at Central. Please welcome and encourage them.

Prayer Requests

Carla Arnold: “Please pray for my former co-worker, Kathleen Smith, who was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with liver metastasis. Please pray that she will come to know Christ and for healing.”

Lorraine Baker: “Please pray for my daughter, Bonni, and all my other children. Thank you, Jesus.”

Jim Blue: “I want to express my gratitude to Father, God for allowing Lindsey as well as myself to find your love and guidance in our lives. Than you, Lord!!”

The Callins (Mary), Bowens (Dot), Trudy Lewis and Bennie Thompson: “Thank you so much for your prayers for our sister, Denita Kneeland. Doctors did not find any tearing in her rotator cuff as had previously shown on MRI. He only had to clean up a diseased portion around bursae in her shoulder. She started physical therapy Thursday, much sooner than anticipated. Our God is Awesome!”

Canterburys: “Please pray for our daughter-in-law’s mother, Diana Groves. She passed out yesterday and was taken to the ER in Winchester, TN. She is being transported to a hospital in Nashville for possible heart problems.” (Update: All of Diana’s tests were good and is now home.)

Dittos: “The Woods are flying back in about ten days. Remember them in prayer!”

John Kuhn Family: “Please continue to pray for Tonda’s mom as she continues to struggle with serious health issues. Also, please continue to pray for Gwenyth’s case and that the Lord’s will be done.”

Jared McCall: “Pray for my friend back home. Their family is on the verge of being homeless. Pray that they can gain financial stability.”

Billy Morrison, Jr.: “Please pray for my mother, Johnnie H. Morrison, for healing and comfort due to medical and mental conditions.”

Regina Ralston came before the body confessing that in some talks regarding their business this past week she did not handle herself in a very Godly way. This is weighing heavily on her conscience. She asked for prayers for God’s forgiveness, so her conscience would be relieved of this burden and that she will grow from this, so it will not happen again.

Lynda Tyler asked for prayers for a study she has with a Jehovah’s Witness next Saturday. She said she knew nothing about what they teach and that she is uneasy about it. She requested prayers for herself and the study. She also asked if anyone had materials or anything that would help her to prepare for the study to please contact her (256-763-3367).

David Walls: “I wanted to say thank GOD to be here in church to serve the Lord.”

Toshiko Wingard: “Please pray for Doug as he struggles with the pain after his doctor changed his medication. Thank you.”

Our Shut-ins: Cindy Anderson, Amelia Biser, James Brown, Jamie Cole, Margie Gough, James Hall, Martha Jones, Sally Mans, Ted & Rosalie Moore, Johnny Powell, Louis Teague, and Bill & Sherill Townsley.

  Mothers-To-Be: Jordan Gibbs (4/15)

From the Elders

“Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.” “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?” (1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 and 2 Corinthians 13:5-6 in the NIV. Also, see Romans 12:2 and 1 John 4:1-3)

We are charged by the Scriptures to continually test ourselves to see whether we are hold firm in the faith. Our situation as children of God in a fallen world is dynamic, not static. The devil never rests, and neither can we; we are called to be alert (1Peter 5:8).  We are called to reject the patterns of this world and be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). Regardless of where we are in our spiritual maturation, we are called to be in a constant state of testing ourselves in the light of Jesus.

When you go into the doctor’s office for a checkup, the first thing you hear is, “Let’s check your vitals.” This usually means weight, temperature, blood pressure and heart rate. One way of looking at Our Journey 2019 is that it is a spiritual checkup. The stops—Upward, Inward, Outward and Forward—are our vital signs: To this is added Godly leadership. The scripture above calls each of us to test ourselves, i.e., our vital signs, using the scriptures. As we continue Our Journey, we are called to ask ourselves:

What does the text say?

What does it call me to do and how am I doing?

Where can I grow?

What am I sharing with others from my Christian walk?

Next Sunday (April 7) will be the last week of exploring Upward. During this last week we will be focusing on:   Christian Characteristic:  My Godly Influence

Key words: Salt and Light

Memory verses: Matthew 5:13a and 14a

Guiding Scriptures: Matthew 5:13-15; Proverbs 27:17; Hebrews 10:23-25; Hebrews 13:7; 1 Peter 3:1-2; 5:1-4; 1 Timothy 4:16. Abomination regarding bad influence, Matthew 18:6; 1 Corinthians 15:33

On April 7 the elders will close this series with a lesson titled, Overseers and Shepherds Reflect.

April 14 — Our traditional Senior Sunday when we recognize our high school and college graduating seniors

April 21 — Specially planned assembly focused primarily on communion and prayer.

April 28 — As previously announced, Lord willing, we begin the next portion of Our Journey, which is Inward Our Life Together. As before, Earl Lavender will be with us again. He will be speaking on “My Belonging to One Another.” His theme text is Romans 4-5. Earl will be speaking to combined adult classes (teens and up), the assembly on Sunday morning, as well as having a Sunday evening Q&A (Time TBA; Likely, 5:30 PM). This will be a good day. Plan to be here. This will be a good time to invite friends and acquaintances.

We ask that you set aside a little time to reflect on the Upward part of Our Journey and what it has meant to you personally. Pray for this church. Pray for the next part of Our Journey. Remember the helpless and harassed and the persecuted.

The Elders,

Chip, Ed and Richard
